Meet The Queer League Team

Founder/Volunqueer
Alex (they/them)
I'm a local (8years) to Guelph queerdo who spent my youth playing every sport I could. I currently work in community services, and previously spent a decade working as a personal trainer and mobility specialist. When I started my transition, rec sports leagues became increasingly uncomfortable for me to be a part of. The stares, the questions, the culture, the language, the gendered requirements..
For someone who was more comfortable on a field or a court than anywhere else for most of my life, it was disorienting to feel like I no longer fit into the world that shaped so much of who I am.
After attending a few queer-specific sporting events outside of Guelph, I couldn't resist the urge to make queer drop-in sports a thing here too.
Selfishly, I created Queer League as a way to gain safer access to sports for myself.. but also because I know I'm not the only one in the community who feels this way!
We all deserve to feel like we belong when we play sports!
Favourite Sport: Volleyball, Basketball & Soccer
Pets: Doggos Captain and Renzo
Hobbies: Hiking, Camping, Canoeing, Dogs, Fitness, a really terrible reality TV binge
Fun Facts: I'm well versed in knee injury rehab after having 4 knee surgeries and currently living with no ACL but managing to play sports still
Why Alex Loves Queer League: We are queering the atmosphere that often comes with recreational sports participation to make it a more accepting place for people of all background, genders, and ability levels!

Kita (they/them)
My name is Kita and I am a facilitator for Spectrum Waterloo Region. I have been leading sports and peer support programs for the queer community for 3 years. There is so much more joy and community in my life since working with Spectrum and connecting with other queer folks through sports. I jumped at the chance to get involved with Queer League Guelph and continue my love of queer community sports ❤️
Favourite Sport: All of them - but especially Tennis!
Hobbies: Board games, Video games, Hiking, Music and Reading
Fun Facts: I offer free lessons for Guitar, Chess, and Juggling!
Why Kita Loves Queer League: To meet amazing folks and help people connect with their community!

Lauren (she/her)
I am a teacher/wife/mom of 3 kids here in Guelph who wants to stay active and have fun. I love to go out dancing with my wife and can be heard sideline of my kiddo’s soccer games most Saturdays 📣🤷🏼♀️. I’ve played different sports my whole life (rugby being my favourite, but don’t tell the other sports) and have been learning to play different ones in my post-contact sport journey.
Favourite Sport: Rugby
Pets: In the near future 🤞🏻
Hobbies: I don’t have a ton of free time between work/kids/home but I like to find time to workout, read, connect with friends & play sports.
Fun Facts: I joined the queer curling league “Out on the Ice” this year and it was so much fun!
Why Lauren Loves Queer League: I’ve never felt othered in sports (as a cis queer woman) but knowing how many folks don’t or didn’t feel safe there highlights the need for safe inclusive spaces for everyone. Sports have given me so much and I think everyone should have a right to play, feel safe and welcome. This league needs to exist because sports are for all.

Mic (they/them)
I’m a 28 year old non binary massage therapist, I’ve always been involved in sports in some capacity until I uncovered more about my gender and then I just felt weird wherever I went, especially in gyms. I love to bake and cook, my specialty is chocolate chip cookies. I love playing video games, some of my favourites are Breath of the Wild, Eastward, Skyrim, and Stardew Valley. I am engaged to my lovely fiancée and we share the two bestest cats out there, Lily and Link. I have lived in the Guelph area for the last three years and hoping to make it my forever home.
Favourite Sport: Basketball
Pets: Lily (aka Bobby) and Link
Hobbies: Video Games, Pain by numbers, Board games, Camping
Fun Facts: I'm a local RMT serving the queer community in Guelph!
Why Mic Loves Queer League: Because it's a space that I can enjoy sports without having to fit into a gender box

Des (he/they)
Hey pals! I’m Des. I’ve always been a sporty spice, but I haven’t always felt comfortable in sporty spaces (especially after coming out as trans). When I’m not at queer league, you might find me out in the forest frolicking about like a woodland gnome. I *love* being outside soaking in all the magic the world has to offer!
Favourite Sport: Rugby
Pets: Cats Honey and Mimi and a loveable muppet (dog) Bonnie.
Hobbies: Hiking, Camping, Canoeing, Yoga, reading
Fun Facts: I run a local queer hiking group called Queerz in Nature!
Why Des Loves Queer League: I stopped playing team sports entirely after I began my transition because I didn't feel comfortable/fit in to gendered sports leagues. I'm so grateful for safe community spaces like Queer League that allow us to connect with & celebrate our bodies, and to have fun while doing it!
